This year’s journey in the spirit of glögg takes us all the way across the Atlantic to Mexico, where a rich culture, vibrant traditions, and spicy flavors await. Blossa 26 Mexiko is a white fortified wine glögg, inspired by the iconic margarita cocktail, where classic glögg spices meet fresh lime and a subtle smokiness from agave. The result is an unexpected yet well-balanced taste experience that brings together Nordic winter traditions with a Mexican fiesta.
“Mexico has been on our radar for some time, and we’ve long been drawn to the flavor combinations the country could bring to our glögg. Lime is a very impactful ingredient with a distinct character, which pairs beautifully with our unique spice blend”, says Åsa Orsvärn, the Chief Blender of Blossa.
Orsvärn describes that the lime adds freshness, while the agave-based spirit gives a soft roundness to the drink.
“The margarita interpretation is perhaps what comes to mind first, but there’s also a depth and spiciness that still makes it feel very much like Blossa.”
The lime in the glögg is a specially developed extract from peeled fruits, which are peeled immediately after harvest and then frozen to preserve their flavor as much as possible. As always, Blossa’s spices are allowed to macerate and mature for at least five months before being blended with the other ingredients and bottled. The glögg spices have also been extracted in agave spirit – a detail that further strengthens the connection to this year’s destination.
This year’s bottle design draws inspiration from papel picado – the traditional Mexican paper art where intricate patterns, like flowers or skulls, are cut into colorful tissue paper and used for holidays and celebrations. Papel picado symbolizes festivity and warmth in Mexican culture. Blossa has interpreted this craft in its own design language, letting the patterns adorn this year’s bottle.
Blossa 26 Mexiko can be served both chilled and at room temperature. This year’s glögg is perfect as a base for a classic margarita, or mixed with a bit of sparkling wine. A tip is to top it with some sparkling water for a lighter drink, and garnish with dried or fresh lime slices. Try it with homemade guacamole and corn chips, or with Spanish hard cheeses on salty crackers.
Blossa 25 Mexiko will be available as a starkvinsglögg (15% ABV) in all Nordic markets, Latvia, Estonia, United Kingdom and Germany. The alcohol free variant will be sold only in Sweden and Finland. Both are available in a 750 ml glass bottle.
Since 2003, Blossa has launched a new flavor for each winter season. Every year, the bottle has also been given a new unique design, which has made every annual variant a sought-after collector's item. Until 2010, Blossa took inspiration from the Nordic winter and Christmas for the annual glögg, but since 2011 they have gone out in the world to seek inspiration. Blossa's classic glögg spices have since been mixed with new and exciting flavors from all corners of the world.
