Read some examples of sustainability in action at Anora.
Anora aims to increase the use of regeneratively farmed barley in spirit production. Regenerative farming is a selection of farming methods that improve yields and help reduce the CO2 emissions. Veli-Pekka Aila is one of Anora’s contract farmers who, together with his wife Noora, has transitioned to using regenerative farming practices.
We partnered with the Baltic Sea Action Group and our contract farmers to develop more environmentally friendly farming methods and launch the world’s first vodka made entirely of regeneratively farmed barley.
The Koskenkorva distillery operates based on the principles of the bio and circular economy: 100% of the grain is utilised. This brought Anora the Green Company of the Year award in 2018 and we are also included on the Finnish future fund Sitra's list of the most interesting companies in circular economy.
The Carbon Action initiative strives to enhance sustainable soil management and carbon farming. The pilot stage started in summer 2019 in the fields of selected contract farmers who grow barley for Anora. The five-year project is designed to find out what kind of cultivation practices could help to store more carbon in the soil.
Anora calculated the carbon footprint of Koskenkorva Vodka in 2019. The majority of carbon dioxide emissions during the life-cycle of Koskenkorva Vodka derive from packaging and barley cultivation used as an ingredient in the vodka, while the Koskenkorva distillery’s proportion is relatively small.
Anora promotes the development of young people’s responsible alcohol consumption and delayed experimentation with alcohol through a school programme. The “Let’s talk about alcohol” programme, based on studies and research, is available for secondary and upper secondary students in Finland and Sweden.
The Rajamäki groundwater area is known as one of the most important groundwater areas of the Salpausselkä ridge system. Protecting the more than 1,000-hectare area owned by Anora and the groundwater beneath it, plays an important role in ensuring the high quality of Anora's products.
Anora made a new Baltic Sea Commitment in September 2018 to enhance practices aiming at sustainable agriculture. The new commitment continues the co-operation between Anora and the Baltic Sea Action Group that was initiated in 2015.
Wine consumption patterns continue to change towards an increasingly sustainable and healthier direction. Demand for organic and ethically produced wines, for instance, is on the rise. Ensuring an ethical production process and offering consumers a wider range of choices is also central for Anora.
Geothermal heat is an environmentally friendly heating solution, which typically replaces oil or electric heating. Anora's Naturet geothermal fluids are a safe, non-toxic and Finnish choice. In Finland, Anora has a leading market position in geothermal fluids.
Fairtrade wines have become a recognized trend in the beverage industry, and they offer wine consumers a reliable way of making ethical purchasing decisions. Anora aims to ensure the responsibility of its wine production through Fairtrade’s certification programme.
